Pittock Mansion, a contemporary house with distinctive architectural and cutting-edge technology, was constructed in 1914. Discover the pioneer spirit underlying Portland's transition from "stumptown" to a modern, industrial city by following the lives of one of the city's most prominent families.
Constructed in 1914, Pittock Mansion narrates the tale of Portland's metamorphosis from an agrarian settlement to a contemporary, industrial metropolis, showcasing the heritage and accomplishments of the Pittocks, a prominent family in the city. In 1964, a group of committed residents prevented the Mansion and its surrounding estate from being demolished. The City of Portland then bought the Mansion and established it as a public historic house museum. The museum's activities were taken up by the nonprofit Pittock Mansion Society in 2007. The Society maintains and operates the historic buildings in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation. Funding for Pittock Mansion comes from regular admission fees, memberships, donations, gifts, and purchases made at the museum store.
This stunning home overlooking Portland is located on Forest Park. In addition to being a magnificent location, it also features an intriguing, if not a little odd, layout and architecture with intriguing details, a fascinating history of the Pittock family, pleasant views of the town, and easy access to fantastic hiking trails from the parking lot. Visit the Gate Lodge, which once housed the estate steward's family and has information about their past.
Among Portland's first residents, the family was a trailblazer and eventually acquired the Oregonian, the city's newspaper, in addition to numerous other commercial and philanthropic ventures.
